If you cannot ping a Windows Server 2008 R2 server, but you can remote desktop etc., then its probably just because the Windows Firewall is turned on and the ‘Ping’ rule is disabled.
- On the server, goto Control Panel
- Check Firewall status
- Advanced Settings
- Inbound Rules
- Find ‘File and Printer Sharing (Echo Request – ICMPv4-In)’ and press ‘Enable’
- You should be able to ping the server now
