If you cannot ping a Windows Server 2008 R2 server, but you can remote desktop etc., then its probably just because the Windows Firewall is turned on and the ‘Ping’ rule is disabled.

  1. On the server, goto Control Panel
  2. Check Firewall status
  3. Advanced Settings
  4. Inbound Rules
  5. Find ‘File and Printer Sharing (Echo Request – ICMPv4-In)’ and press ‘Enable’
  6. You should be able to ping the server now
